From finding the carved pumpkin to creating it, our guide goes over all aspects of this unique block. But, if you are only interested in crafting it, feel free to skip ahead.

What is a Carved Pumpkin in Minecraft

The carved pumpkin is a decorative building block in Minecraft that you get by carving a pumpkin. It looks similar to a regular pumpkin, except it has a face carved on one of its sides. Plus, it also works like a helmet for the players and armor stands.

Where Do Carved Pumpkins Spawn

Currently, the carved pumpkins only spawn within two structures of Minecraft:

  • Woodland Mansions: You can find carved pumpkins as decoration within the rail rooms.
  • Pillager Outposts: Carved pumpkins spawn as part of scarecrows surrounding the main tower. But, similar to Allay cages, they only spawn in some outposts.

Unmasking Golems

If you are playing on the best Minecraft servers, it's only a matter of time before you encounter a Snow Golem. These mobs very rarely spawn naturally but players love to create them in snowy biomes.

When you find a Snow Golem, craft and use a shear on its head to remove its carved pumpkin. Doing so doesn't harm the golem but turns it into a snowman.

Find Pumpkins

You can find patches of pumpkins in all grassy biomes of Minecraft within the overworld. These commonly include:

  • Jungle
  • Plains
  • Meadow
  • Taiga (all variants)
  • Cherry Grove
  • Windswept Hills
  • Forest (all variants)

Other than these, you can also find pumpkins inside farm rooms of Woodland Mansions and woolen tents of Pillager Outposts. But, both of these structures are guarded by Pillagers. So, unless you also want armor trims, it's best to avoid them.

But, thanks to the world generation, naturally generating pumpkins are rarer than diamond ores in Minecraft. So, be ready to travel far and long before encountering them on your journey.

Grow Pumpkins

If searching for pumpkins doesn't go as planned, you can also grow them manually. Follow these steps to learn how:

1. First, search for Pumpkin seeds in your world. They naturally spawn in the chests of dungeons, mineshafts, villages, and mansions.

2. Craft a hoe and use it to turn dirt/grass blocks into farmland. Also, ensure a water source is nearby to irrigate your farm.

3. Next, right-click on the farmland block to plant your pumpkin seeds on it.

4. Then, wait for around 20 minutes for the seeds to slowly grow a stem and then a pumpkin.

Craft Shears

If you want to carve a pumpkin in Minecraft, you first need to get your hands on shears. To craft shears, place two iron ingots diagonally next to each other in the crafting grid. Alternatively, you can also buy them from Shepherd villagers in exchange for emeralds.

How to Use a Carved Pumpkin in Minecraft

The carved pumpkin is one of the most fun items in the game. You can use them for a variety of purposes. Let's explore all of them.

Helmet

Players can wear carved pumpkins as helmets by placing them in their inventory slot. Once equipped, your vision with get an overlay similar to the pumpkin's carved face. This mechanic doesn't only allow you to look distinct but also prevents Endermen from turning hostile even when you are directly looking at them.

Jack o'Lantern

Carved pumpkins are a great decoration for any base, whether it's a scary house or a Minecraft barn. But, you can take it to the next level by combining the carved pumpkin with a touch to craft a Jack-o-Lantern.

As you can guess, this variant of the pumpkin emits light from its carved face. This light is of level 15, which is higher than the torch powering them. Moreover, unlike torches, you can use Jack o-Lantern underwater too.

Snow and Iron Golem

You can use carved pumpkins as well as Jack-o-Lantern to make an Iron Golem and a Snow Golem in Minecraft. As mentioned earlier, you can take the pumpkin back from a Snow Golem, but that mechanic doesn't work with Iron Golems.

Composting

If you have too many carved pumpkins, turning them into bone meal might be a good idea. To do so, simply place the excess pumpkins inside a composter. Each pumpkin has a 65% chance of increasing the compost level by 1. But, keep in mind that this doesn't work with Jack-o-Lanterns.
