What is Warden in Minecraft?

Warden is a dangerous hostile mob in Minecraft. Its appearance is nothing short of a nightmare, featuring a dark blue body with an exposed ribcage on its chest. But, unlike other mobs, it doesn't start attacking when you get in front of it. Instead, due to its blindness, the Warden relies upon vibrations and smells to detect its enemies. But, that isn't all. This hostile mob lives up to its overwhelming aura with a set of scary attacks.

It usually relies on melee strikers to take down its enemies. One hit from the Warden is enough to take away half the health of an armored player, shield or no shield. Meanwhile, if the opponent is far from the Warden, it resorts to using a Sonic Boom. This ranged attack not only inflicts great damage but also delivers a powerful knockback.

Is Warden a Boss?

Warden is one of the most powerful and dangerous hostile mobs in Minecraft. Yet, officially, it is not a "boss" mob. The title of boss mobs in Minecraft is reserved for the Wither and the Ender Dragon. But, don't let the lack of a title deceive you.

This mob has more health than both boss mobs combined, making Warden the mob with the most HP in Minecraft. Furthermore, its attacks can kill you with a single hit unless you are using Netherite armor.

Where Does Warden Spawn?

The Warden only spawns inside the Ancient City structure of Minecraft. It is a massive underground structure that generates in the overworld dimension and in the Deep Dark biome. So, if you want to meet the Warden in Minecraft, it's time to search for this amazing structure.

Best Ways to Find Ancient Cities

From commands to exploration, there are a bunch of ways to find an Ancient City in Minecraft. You can refer to our linked guide to explore them in depth. But, for now, here's everything you need to know:

  • Biome: Ancient Cities usually generate beneath the mountainous biomes within the overworld. This makes the best Minecraft mountain seeds a great way to find them.
  • Height: The base of all Ancient Cities is at the world height of Y=-51. So, you only need to dig to that level to find it.
  • Sculk: The Sculk blocks only spawn in and around the deep dark biome. If you stumble upon them while exploring caves, you just need to follow them to find an Ancient City.

How to Spawn Warden in an Ancient City

Once you find an Ancient City, it's only a matter of time before you meet Warden in Minecraft. But, unlike other hostile mobs, this dangerous foe doesn't spawn automatically in your world. Instead, you have to trigger the Warden to make it spawn. Here's how:

1. First, explore the Ancient City until you come across a Sculk Shrieker block. It looks similar to a claw and has an eye-like symbol moving at its center.

2. Then, jump around or place some blocks in that area to make vibrations. These vibrations get detected by Sculk Sensor blocks and send a signal to the Sculk Shriker.

3. Whenever a Sculk Shriker receives a signal, it makes a loud shrieking sound and blasts circular particles.

4. The first two shrieking sounds are only a warning for the players. But, if you trigger the Sculk Shrieker thrice then the Warden will spawn.

5. Not to forget, on the off chance, that there is no Sculk Sensor nearby, the Sculk Shriker cannot detect your vibrations. Then, you need to jump or walk on top of the Sculk Shriker to activate it.

Prevent Warden From Spawning

Warden is a powerful and exciting mob to fight in Minecraft. But, unless you prepare for the battle right, meeting it can be a truly fatal mistake. So, here are a few ways to prevent the Warden from spawning, until you are ready for it:

  • Sculk Shrieker: If you break a Sculk Shrieker before it sends three signals, the Warden doesn't spawn. But, you only get a few seconds to do it. So, make sure to use a diamond hoe or stronger to break the Sculk block. stronger to break the Sculk block.
  • Wool: You can place wool blocks or carpets around the Ancient City to cancel out vibrations. They not only prevent sensors from detecting movements but don't make any vibrations of their own.
  • Sneaking: Sneaking doesn't cause any vibrations in Minecraft. So, you can hold your sneak key while exploring the Ancient City to prevent activating any Sculk blocks.
  • Looting: From armor trims to enchanted books, all Ancient Cities are loaded with rare loot. But, opening chests also causes vibrations that can spawn a Warden. To prevent them, you need to surround your chest with wool blocks, before opening it, and cancel the vibrations.

Ways to Defeat the Warden

Now that you know how to find the Warden in Minecraft, it's time to take it down. But, to do so, you first need to prepare yourself and your toolkit for the task. Let's figure out how.

Swift Sneak

One of the best ways to deal with the Warden is to run away from it. But, running and walking cause vibrations which, in turn, end up making the Warden angrier. Fortunately, you can increase the speed of your sneaking to avoid this mob without triggering it.

To unlock faster sneaking, you need to enchant your boots with Swift Sneak enchantment. This enchantment only spawns as an enchanted book within the Ancient City structure. So, make sure to carry an anvil on your quest to quickly apply the enchantment.

Projectiles

The Warden can kill you with just a couple of attacks if you get too close to it. That's why it's best to rely upon crossbows and arrows to harm it. But, if you want a more powerful weapon then an enchanted trident might be a better pick.

Iron Golem

Iron Golems are one of the most reliable mobs in Minecraft. They can help you take down any hostile mob in the game including the all-powerful Warden. But, one golem isn't strong enough to deadly mob on its own.
