What is an Iron Golem in Minecraft

Iron Golems are some of the strongest neutral mobs in Minecraft whose main aim is to protect villagers by killing monsters. So, whenever they see a hostile mob they start attacking them. Moreover, if you attack a villager in front of a natural Iron Golem it won't hesitate to hunt you down as well.

However, crafted Iron Golems are different from their naturally spawned counterparts. However, crafted Iron Golems are different from their naturally spawned counterparts. You can even go ahead and attack a crafted golem but it won't hurt you back.

Where Do Iron Golems Spawn

Naturally, you can find an Iron Golem only in the following locations:

  • Villages (all types)
  • Pillager Outpost (inside cages)

The villagers and Iron Golems have a deeply connected life. If one location has three or more villagers panicking about a hostile mob, Minecraft automatically spawns an Iron Golem. You can rely on this mechanic and breed villagers to spawn this mob anywhere you want. But, if you don't want to take that route, it's time to learn how to make an Iron Golem in Minecraft easily.

What Do You Need to Build an Iron Golem

You only need the following items to build an Iron Golem in Minecraft:

  • 4 Iron Blocks (requires 36 iron ingots to craft)
  • 1 Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern

As you can guess from its name, the most important element of an Iron Golem is its iron body. For that, you first have to use our ore distribution guide to find iron ore in your world. Then, you need to mine the ore with a pickaxe and smelt the raw iron in a furnace.

Once you have 9 iron ingots, they can be combined to create an iron block. To make an Iron Golem in Minecraft, you need a total of four such iron blocks. So, even though the overall process is simple, it can be somewhat time-consuming.

How to Get Carved Pumpkin

Follow these steps to get a carved pumpkin, the head of an Iron Golem:

1. First, look for a taiga village or grassland to find pumpkins growing there. You can use our list of the best Minecraft village seeds to speed up the process.

2. Next, combine two iron ingots in a diagonal to craft shears.

3. Then, use the shears on the pumpkin you found to turn it into a carved pumpkin. Finally, break the carved pumpkin with the help of any tool or your hands to pick it up.

4. Additionally, you can even combine a carved pumpkin with a torch to turn it into a jack o’lantern. Minecraft allows you to use either a carved pumpkin or a jack-o’lantern to build an Iron Golem.

Steps to Build an Iron Golem

After collecting all the required items, it's time to build an Iron Golem in Minecraft. Follow these easy steps to learn how:

1. First, create a short tower by placing two iron blocks on top of one another.

2. Then, place two iron blocks on either side of the iron block that's on top of the tower. While you create it, make sure you are in an open area so other blocks don't block the golem's spawning.

3. Finally, place a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top of the T-shaped structure to finish it. As soon as you place the pumpkin, the entire structure will break and an Iron Golem will spawn in its place.

Note: Players on the Bedrock edition can even use a regular pumpkin to complete the structure.

How to Heal an Iron Golem

Keeping up with their reputation as a protector, the Iron Golems are great fighters but they are not indestructible. Every time they take serious damage, cracks start showing up on their body and once they take a total damage of 100 points, they die.

Unfortunately, unlike mobs like the Sniffer, Iron Golems can't heal themselves. So, it's up to you to protect their lives by healing them with the help of iron ingots. Every iron ingot you use on a golem restores its health by 25 points.
