How to Find Dungeons in Minecraft (4 Methods)

Whether you want to farm XP with mobs or get a bunch of rare loot, dungeons are a great spot. Nevertheless, these remarkable structures aren't easy to find. Even if you have the best pickaxe in Minecraft, it can be hard to find without knowing the right spot. So, join us as we figure out how to find dungeons in Minecraft with four unique methods.

How to Find Dungeons in Minecraft (2023)

From commands to exploration, our guide goes over a variety of ways to find dungeons in Minecraft. But before going over them, we are covering the basics of this unique spot. If you are already familiar with dungeons, please feel free to skip ahead.

What are Dungeons in Minecraft

Dungeons are small underground chambers in Minecraft that generate in the overworld. The walls of this structure are made of cobblestone blocks, while their flooring features mossy cobblestone. You can find a bunch of hostile mobs, amazing loot, and an exclusive functional block in Dungeons. But, more on that later.

What is a Monster Room in Minecraft

After the launch of the Minecraft 1.14 update, the developers renamed Dungeons as "Monster Rooms." Moreover, the game now categorizes them as a world feature rather than a distinct structure.

But, this minor change doesn't affect the way Dungeons generate or work. So, to avoid any confusion we will continue to use their original and popular name.

What Can You Find Inside a Dungeon

Every Dungeon in Minecraft contains up to two chests, which offer a diverse array of unique items. If you find a dungeon in Minecraft, it can lead to the following loot:

  • Bone
  • Gunpowder
  • Rotten Flesh/Bread/Wheat
  • String
  • Name Tag
  • Saddle
  • Coal
  • Bucket
  • Iron/Gold/Diamond Horse Armor
  • Golden Apple/Enchanted Golden Apple
  • Beetroot, Pumpkin, and Melon Seeds
  • Iron Ingot or Gold Ingot
  • Redstone Dust
  • Music Disc (Cat/13/Otherside)
  • Enchanted Book

In the case of enchanted books that spawn in Dungeons, you can find all enchantments in Minecraft, except for Soul Speed, and Swift Sneak. Moreover, each of these books has an equal chance of spawning with any level of enchantments.

What is a Monster Spawner

A Monster Spawner is a rare and unique functional block that sits in the middle of every dungeon in Minecraft. This block looks like a small cage and spawns either zombies, skeletons, or spiders. You can notice a miniature version of the mob, which the spawner summons, rotating within it.

At first, the presence of this block sounds like a nightmare as it makes dungeons hard to explore. But, with careful planning, you can control how the mobs spawn and use it to farm experience orbs. Plus, all the loot that the hostile mobs drop is an additional bonus.

Best Ways to Find Dungeons in Minecraft

There are a bunch of ways to find dungeons in Minecraft including:

  • Using third-party solutions to analyze your seed
  • Manually generating a Dungeon using in-game commands
  • Exploring your world to find a Dungeon in Minecraft traditionally
  • Relying upon the best Minecraft seeds for spawning close to a dungeon

If you are playing on the worlds from our Minecraft server list then exploration is our best option. All the other methods are only suitable for players in the single-player world or Minecraft Realm owners.

Minecraft Dungeon Finder (Method 1)

The easiest and most reliable way to find dungeons in Minecraft is by analyzing your seed. Here's how:

1. First, find the seed code of your world by using this command in Minecraft Java edition:

/seed

Meanwhile, Bedrock users can find the seed in the "World Settings" within the pause menu. Though, if you are planning to find dungeons in a new world then our list of Minecraft survival seeds will come in handy.

2. Next, open Chunkbase's seed analyzer (here) in your browser. Then write or paste the seed code of your world in the "seed" column and select the version of your game.

3. Within a couple of seconds, Chunkbase will show you a map of your world along with all the key structures in it. Toggle Dungeons in the map by clicking on the "spawner icon".

4. Then, zoom in to find all the Dungeons in your Minecraft world. You can click on the icons on the map to get the coordinates of any Dungeon.

Command to Generate Dungeon (Method 2)

If you're struggling to find dungeons in Minecraft then maybe it's time to create on your own. But, before you do so, you need to find a location with the following requirements:

  • The floor of the selected area must be made of solid blocks and not fluids like lava.
  • The area's ceiling must have solid blocks too. Though, it can be made of gravity-affected blocks like sand or gravel.
  • Furthermore, the wall of the dungeon's location must be adjacent to a hollow cave.

To make it easy, you can look for small caves similar to the following screenshot. Once you find a suitable spot, go to that location and execute the following command:

/place minecraft:monster_room ~ ~ ~

The command generates a dungeon at your current location. But there is no way to control the mob in the spawner or the loot in the chests. They are completely random. However, you can create multiple dungeons until you find the one that fits your needs.

Where Do Dungeons Spawn in Minecraft (Method 3)

You can find Dungeons in any Minecraft biome. They tend to generate close to other underground locations like caves, ravines, mineshafts, and strongholds. Usually, they generate below the world height of Y=0 but they can also spawn at surface level in some cases.

One of the most reliable ways to find Dungeons in Minecraft is by searching for cave biomes. You can also use the best lush caves seeds in Minecraft to speed up the process. But, if you have an enchanted pickaxe, just wandering around the caves might be just enough.

Tips to Locate Dungeons

Now that you know how to find dungeons in Minecraft, here are tips to make the search easier:

  • Hostile Mobs: If you see a bunch of hostile mobs in your caves, following them can lead to spawners in dungeons.
  • Night Vision: You can use a Potion of Night Vision to see clearly in caves and find the dungeons.
  • Mob Spawner: If you want to use the mob spawner later, it's best to cover it up with blocks. Otherwise, it's best to break it to avoid encountering hostile mobs while looting the dungeon.
  • Blast: You can use TNT in Minecraft to clear large areas at once. Doing so will significantly increase your chances of spotting a Dungeon in Minecraft.
  • Cobblestone: While you can easily find stone and deepslate in the caves, cobblestone don't spawn as often. So, it's best to look for the distinct design of these grainy blocks to find a dungeon's wall.

Best Minecraft Dungeon Seeds (Method 4)

When you can't find a structure in your world, it's maybe time to change your world. Luckily, we have two of the best Minecraft seeds which can lead you to dungeons right after spawning. Some of them even generate dungeons that you might never find in your world by exploring.

All you need to do is create a new world, go to the coordinates, and start digging.

Bedrock Edition - 3 in 1 Dungeon Seed

  • Seed: -1862984904
  • Dungeon Coordinates: 1218, 10, 6437

Java Edition - Merged Dungeons

Find and Loot Minecraft Dungeons

Just like that, you are now ready to take your cave adventure to a whole new level. But, before you start exploring, you need to make a shield in Minecraft to counter the hostile cave mobs. Moreover, food is scarce inside the caves. So, having a Potion of Healing might also help. Speaking of strategies, do you have any other tips for finding dungeons in Minecraft?
