7 Best XP Farms in Minecraft (2024)

From repairing items to applying enchantments, the experience can play a big role in your Minecraft gameplay. In many ways, it even acts as an overall score after every death during your play. So, let’s make sure that your XP level is always high with some of the best XP farms in Minecraft.

Best XP Farms in Minecraft

From design to results, all the XP farms in our list cater to different needs. Make sure to explore all of them before you start building one in your world.

1. Classic Mob XP Farm in Minecraft

When players think of XP farm, mob grinders are often the first thing that comes to their mind. While they might not be as effective as some of the other farms on our list, it is extremely fun. Not to forget, you also get a bunch of mob loot from it as a bonus.

As for functionality, this farm relies on hostile mobs spawning in dark areas and lowering their health. Once enough vulnerable mobs gather at one spot, you can use a sword to kill them and collect XP orbs. It is a favorite of players on Minecraft Skyblock.

Items Required

You only need these items to make a typical mob XP farm:

  • 2 Water Buckets
  • 2 Chests
  • 18+ Stacks of Cobblestone
  • 6 Stacks of Slabs
  • 64 Trap Doors
  • 4 Hoppers

Voltrox has a reliable tutorial to build this farm from scratch in no time. Plus, their concept only takes a few minutes to build which is perfect for beginners.

How to Make Mob XP Farm

To make a mob XP farm, you need to build a tall tower that is 21 blocks tall. Then, build a dark platform of the hostile mobs to spawn with water pushing them towards the opening in the middle. When the hostile mobs fall from this height, they receive a lot of fall damage. Then, you just need to sweep in and hunt them with a single stroke to get XP.

2. Sculk XP Farm

When it comes to breaking blocks, nothing drops more experience than the Sculk blocks from the deep dark. Plus, the Sculk catalyst can consume XP from dying mobs to spawn an infinite amount of Sculk blocks. You just combine the two mechanics to collect a bunch of experience.

Items Required

  • Sculk Catalyst
  • Pickaxe
  • Mob XP Farm (Mob Grinder)
  • Mob Spawner (Optional)

How to Make Sculk XP Farm in Minecraft

With a great amount of XP, comes an even greater sacrifice. For that, you need to increase the height of your mob grinder and place a Sculk catalyst at its bottom. Instead of just lowering their health, the farm will now kill mobs and turn blocks around it into Sculk.

Once enough time has passed, you can step in and collect XP by mining blocks. Things cannot get any simpler than this. But be sure not to make this farm near an Ancient City or you might have to face the Warden.

3. Piglin Bartering Farm

It's your lucky day if you know how to get gold in Minecraft. This farm uses Zombified Piglin to automatically collect gold ingots and share them with Piglins. In turn, Piglins not only drops XP by bartering by also offers a bunch of useful items. The only catch is that it is one of the most complicated farms on our list.

Items Required

If you plan on using the comprehensive tutorial by moretingz, here's all you need:

  • 64 Building blocks
  • 36 Chests and Hoppers
  • 18 Redstone Dust
  • 6 Comparators, Repeaters, and Redstone Torches
  • 4 Observers, Carpets, and Trapdoors
  • 2 Droppers, Fence Gates, and Netherrack Blocks
  • 1 Turtle Egg, Carved Pumpkin, and Flint & Steel
  • 32 Buttons
  • 8 Rotten Flesh and Gold Nuggets

Later, you can expand this farm to accumulate more mobs and also spawn more Zombified Piglins. But if you build it below the Nether roof, make sure to give yourself protection against the Nether mobs.

How to Make Piglin Gold/XP Farm in Minecraft

As you might expect, you first need to visit the Nether dimension to create this farm. There, look for an open area where Zombified Piglins commonly spawn, preferably the roof.

Then, make a mob XP farm that spawns Zombified mobs and kills them to collect gold ingots. Finally, supply the ingots to a Piglin and collect XP from kills as well as bartering.

4. Mob Spawner Farm

If you like to explore the underground areas of the overworld, it's only a matter of time before you find a dungeon in Minecraft. Also known as a Monster Room, this small structure houses the rare Mob Spawner block. With this block, you can endlessly spawn a certain hostile mob and farm it for XP or items.

Items Required

The overall design of this reliable farm is quite similar to regular mob XP farms in Minecraft. But, instead of relying upon darkness, it uses the Mob Spawner for its supply of mobs.

So, you can eliminate the complex tower structure and replace it with magma blocks or AFK sword attacks. Youtuber OinkOink already has a quick and easy tutorial for the same. It only requires 15 ladders, 2 water buckets, and 1 trapdoor.

How to Make Mob Spawner XP Farm

The idea here is quite simple. Since you already have a way of spawning mobs, you just need to funnel and kill them. For that, create a tunnel-like structure beneath the Mob Spawner. Then, use water to push the mobs into the tunnel and make them lose XP.

The easiest way to do so is by using a Netherite sword or damaging blocks like cactus. Not to forget, you can also combine this design with the Sculk XP farm to collect even more experience.

5. Stone XP Farm in Minecraft

While it might not be as exciting as hunting, smelting is also a great way to collect XP in Minecraft. So, if you want to step away from the violent farms, it's time to look for blocks to smelt.

Items Required

You only need these basic items to begin the Stone XP farm:

  • Furnace
  • Pickaxe
  • Area with stone/cobblestone blocks
  • Fuel (Coal/Charcoal/Wood)

Later, as you collect more cobblestones, you can turn them into furnaces and expand your farm.

How to Make Stone XP Farm

To make a stone XP Farm in Minecraft, you just need to use a chest to funnel cobblestones into a furnace. This furnace will smelt the cobblestone into stone blocks and drop XP orbs. Later, you can channel the new stone blocks into another furnace to collect more XP and get smooth stone.

While this process is happening you can go around your world mining stone blocks. Since they are one of the most common blocks in the overworld, it won't take long to get hundreds of them. The best part is that this farm also gives you a ton of blocks to try various build ideas.

6. Kelp XP Farm

If mining and collecting stones feels too much work, it's time to dive underwater. This farm also relies upon smelting but instead of stones, it uses kelp to farm XP orbs. Along with it, you end up with dried kelp that you can turn into blocks or even eat.

But what makes it better than the Stone XP farm is that you can grow kelp within it. So, instead of running around collecting blocks to smelt, you can just wait idly.

Items Required

Following the simple tutorial of JC Playz, you will only need these easy-to-get items:

  • 2 Water Buckets
  • 6 Sand Blocks, Ladders and Chests
  • 5 Restone Torches
  • 1 Redstone Repeater
  • 6 Smokers (Or furnaces)
  • 15 Hoppers
  • 3 Kelp, Trapdoors, Signs, Sticky Pistons, Pistons and Stone Slabs
  • 7 Levers
  • 64 Solid Blocks

Since most of these blocks are easy to obtain, you can build this farm quite early in your gameplay. Later, you can repeat the same design to create a few more copies and farm even more XP.

How to Make Kelp XP Farm in Minecraft

At the core of this farm is a simple crop area where kelp grows and automatically gets farmed. You will need some water and sandblocks to plant the kelp. Then, the broken kelp gets collected and funneled into a smoker which smelts it.

Over time, the smoker fills up with XP orbs and the chests beneath it become home to dry kelp. In the end, you not only level up but also get a lot of free food. Plus, since kelp isn't one of the best food in Minecraft you need a lot of it anyways.

7. Cactus And Bamboo Farm

When it comes to automatic farming plants, cactus and bamboo are the easiest options. Luckily, they are also one of the best options for XP orbs in Minecraft. You get one XP whenever you craft green dye from a cacti. Meanwhile, bamboo acts as a fuel for powering the furnace that is continuously smelting cactus.

Items Required

This farm comes in a variety of sizes and designs. But these items always remain the same:

  • Sand block
  • Water
  • Bamboo
  • Cacti
  • Piston
  • Redstone Dust
  • Observer
  • Furnace

If you want a simple yet effective design then the tutorial by Avomance is all you need. Though, initially, it would be better to start with a smaller cactus or bamboo farm before combining the two.

How to Make Cactus And Bamboo Farm

The Cactus XP farm begins with dedicated areas to grow bamboo and cactus automatically. These plants stay under the eye of an observer which makes the pistons break them after they reach a certain height.

Next, either water or a row of hoppers move both of these items inside a furnace. The furnace turns cactus into green dye thanks to bamboo acting as a fuel. Since there is no mob cap on plants, this farm can go on endlessly. Plus, if you make it within spawn chunks, you don't even have to stay AFK for it to work.

Make Easy XP Farms in Minecraft

With that, you are ready to create one or all of the best XP farms in Minecraft. But, unless you are careful with the design, they can be an eyesore in your world. Luckily, the best Minecraft village build ideas can fit most of them. If not, covering your farm with a Minecraft barn is sure to help.
