Nether Mobs in Minecraft

You can skip ahead to the mob you want to learn about or explore all of them by reading through the guide thoroughly.

What is the Nether Dimension of Minecraft

Nether is one of the three dimensions of Minecraft. It has an overwhelming hell-like appearance, powered by lava, dangerous monsters, and reddish blocks. Beds and water do not function in this dimension, making it a formidable challenge to explore. But, thanks to its exclusive loot, the Nether is an essential dimension if you want to complete the game.

How to Go to the Nether in Minecraft

If you want to travel to the Nether dimension, you first need to make a Nether portal in Minecraft, which requires 10 obsidian blocks. Plus, you also need to get Fire Charge or Flint & Steel to activate the portal using the fire.

List of All Nether Mobs in Minecraft

There are a total of 12 mobs that only spawn in the Nether dimension:

  • Blaze
  • Ghast
  • Chicken Jockey (with Baby Piglin)
  • Hoglin
  • Hoglin
  • Jockey
  • Magma Cube
  • Piglin
  • Piglin Brute
  • Strider
  • Wither Skeleton
  • Zombied Piglin

Beyond these mobs, you can also find chickens, chicken jockeys, Endermen, and skeletons in the Nether. But, since these mobs are not exclusive to the Nether dimension, we are not focusing on them within this guide.

Neutral Mobs in the Nether Dimension

The neutral mobs in Minecraft don't attack players until they get attacked first. Despite Nether's dimension reputation for danger, it's also home to several neutral mobs.

Piglin

  • Drops: Golden sword, crossbow, and Piglin head

Piglins are weapon-wielding mobs in the Nether dimension of Minecraft. They become hostile towards players if they are not wearing a piece of gold armor. Unfortunately, armor trims don't count. You can find Piglins roaming around Nether wastes and crimson forest biomes. They also spawn inside the Bastion Remnant structures.

But, what sets Piglisn truly apart from other Nether mobs in Minecraft is their ability to barter. You can use or throw a gold ingot on a Piglin to trade with it. The Piglin will inspect the ingot and drop a random item in return. You can explore our dedicated guide on Piglin trades in Minecraft to find out what to expect.

Zombified Piglin

  • Drops: Rotten flesh, gold ingot, gold nugget, golden sword, golden axe, crossbow, and warped fungus on a stick

As the name suggests, Zombified Piglins are an undead variant of the regular Piglins. Unlike these counterparts, these mobs don't have the ability to barter. These mobs usually ignore the players but if you attack one Zombified Piglin, its entire fleet will hunt you down.

You can find them in Nether wastes, crimson forests, and close to Nether portals. Plus, these mobs can also spawn in the Overworld but only in very rare situations. When a Pigling or Piglin brute stays in the Pverworld for too long or if a pig gets struck by lightning, it turns into a Zombified Piglin.

Hostile Nether Mobs in Minecraft

Hostile mobs in Minecraft attack players on sight. They don't wait for you to attack them first and are extremely dangerous. You can find 7 unique hostile Nether mobs in Minecraft.

Blaze

  • Drops: Blaze rod

Blazes are one of the most important mobs in Minecraft. Their drop allows you to create fuel for Brewing Stand to make potions and even craft the Eyes of Ender, which are vital to finishing the game. You can find blazes inside the Nether Fortress of Minecraf, close to a mob spawner.

But, don't even think about going near a Blaze without a shield to protect you. These mobs can launch three fireballs at you, causing damage and igniting you. Moreover, Blazes have the ability to fly, making them challenging to fight in open areas.

Ghast

  • Drops: Ghast tear, gunpowder

Ghasts are one of the largest mobs in Minecraft. They look like giant white blocks and float around the Nether dimension. You can find them in basalt deltas, Nether wastes, and soul sand valley biomes, all of which often have open space.

The easiest way to find a ghast in Minecraft is by listening for its crying sounds which can be heard from a distance of up to 80 blocks. When a Ghast spots you, it shoots fireballs that you can hit to send back at the Ghast. But, if you miss the fireball, it will land and explode, causing almost as much damage as a TNT.

Hoglin

  • Drops: Raw porkchop, leather

Hoglins are boar-like wild mobs that only spawn in the crimson forest biome and Bastion Remnants. They are extremely powerful and deal great knockback while damaging you with their attacks. But, they are also the only breedable hostile mobs in Minecraft.

You can feed two Hoglins crimson fungus to breed them. This gives players a reliable source of meat within the Nether dimension. But, keep in mind that there is no way to tame Hoglins in Minecraft. So, you have to avoid getting close to them in every situation. Even the baby Hoglins can attack you.

Hoglin Jockey

  • Drops: NA

In the world of Minecraft, the term "jockey" refers to one mob riding another mob. With this case of Hoglin jockey, you can find baby Piglins riding baby Hoglins in the crimson forest biome. While the baby Piglins are completely passive towards the players, the Hoglins will try to attack you.

Magma Cube

  • Drops: Magma cream, Froglight

Magma Cubes are Nether mobs in Minecraft that are a counterpart to the slimes of Overworld. You can find them in all biomes of the Nether at all light levels. But, they are more common in Basalt Deltas. These mobs love to jump around and can only attack you when you get close to them.

Moreover, much like slimes, killing the larger magma cubes makes them divine into smaller cubes. This division works at three levels. The best part is that you can use a frog to kill the smallest slime and make them drop Froglights.

Piglin Brute

  • Drops: Golden axe

Piglin Brute are the aggressive counterparts of the Piglins in Minecraft. They are extremely powerful and cannot be distracted with gold. These mobs attack players, Withers, and Wither skeletons as soon as they see them.

You can find Piglin Brutes only in the Bastion Remnants structures. But, unless you have a Potion of Healing, it's best to avoid fighting the Piglin Brutes altogether. They rank among the strongest non-boss mobs in the game, second only to the Iron Golem and the Warden.

Wither Skeleton

  • Drops: Coal, bones, stone sword, Wither skeleton skull

The Wither skeletons are black variants of the regular skeletons. These Nether mobs in Minecraft fight with special stone swords that inflict a Wither-like effect. Even though they are not hard to defeat, you can find yourself struggling once you get hit by Wither skeletons.

But since they only spawn in the Nether fortress, you don't have to worry about encountering them anywhere else. Though, their presence can make it much harder to get the rib armor trim in Minecraft.

Passive Mobs in Minecraft

The passive mobs in Minecraft don't attack players in any situation. You can attack and even kill them without facing any consequences at all.

Baby Piglins

  • Drops: NA

The baby Piglins are the only baby variants in Minecraft that don't grow up. Thanks to the blessing of eternal youth, they lack the ability to hold weapons or barter with players. You can find baby Piglins in Nether wastes and Crimson forest biomes and within Bastion remnants.

Though, when they spawn inside the Crimson forest, there is a small chance of baby Piglins spawning as Hoglin Jockey. In that situation, the baby hogling that the baby piglins are riding will try to attack you.

Strider

  • Drops: String

Striders are the only Nether mobs in Minecraft that you can ride using a saddle and you don't even need to tame them. At times, you can also find Zombified Piglins riding the Striders. To ride a Strider, locate one in the lava pools of the Nether and simply hop on top of it.

However, to control the Strider, you'll need to craft a warped fungus on a stick. They are well adapted to lava and can walk on top of lava without sinking. But, when Striders get out of lava, they become extremely slow, start shivering, and lose their iconic color.

Chicken Jockey

  • Drops: NA

While the sight is extremely rare, you can find baby Zombified Piglins riding chickens in the Nether. This unusual combination allows the Piglins to avoid fall damage and explore unique locations in the Nether terrain.

If you kill the Zombified Piglin, the chicken roams around freely. However, it doesn't have the ability to lay eggs and despawns quicker than regular chickens. But, if you are quick, you can kill the chicken to get chicken meat right within the Nether dimension.
