Minecraft Piglin Trades

Our guide covers the entire bartering system of Piglins within separate sections. Please feel free to skip to the main tutorial if you are already familiar with the rest.

What are Piglins in Minecraft and Where to Find Them

Piglins are neutral mobs found exclusively in the Nether dimension of Minecraft. They often carry a golden sword or crossbow and use it to attack you on sight. However, you can wear a piece of golden armor to distract them and prevent them from getting hostile.

But, you have to be wary of the Piglin brutes. They are stronger than regular Piglins and cannot be distracted by gold. The easiest way to recognize them is by looking at their black chest plate which has a golden pattern similar to the Ward Armor trim.

How to Trade with Piglins in Minecraft

Unlike villagers in Minecraft, the Piglins don't have a dedicated UI for trading, nor use emeralds as a currency. Instead, you have to throw gold ingots at them and wait for Piglins to drop an item.

The choice of the item is completely random and there is no way to influence it. While we'll explore the available trades in a later segment, the first step is to collect gold.

Best Methods to Get Gold

There are a bunch of ways to find gold in Minecraft. You can use the linked guide to explore all of them in detail. But, for now, here are some of the best methods:

  • Chest Loot: The buried treasures have the highest chance of spawning with gold ingots in them. But, you can find gold in other structures as well.
  • Gold Blocks: Ruined Portals, Bastion Remnants, and Ocean Monuments spawn with blocks of gold inside them. Each block gives you 9 gold ingots making them the quickest way to gather gold.
  • Gold Ore: If you want to go the traditional route, you can use our Minecraft 1.20 ore distribution guide to find gold ore blocks. They spawn in the highest concentration at the height of Y=-16.

How to Barter in Minecraft

Once you have obtained enough gold, follow these steps to trade with Piglins in Minecraft:

1. The Piglins are naturally hostile toward players who are not wearing gold. So, you first need to use four gold ingots on the crafting table to make golden boots in Minecraft. This also works with other pieces of armor but boots are often the cheapest option.

2. Then, make a Nether portal in Minecraft and travel to the Nether dimension.

3. Once you are in the Nether, you need to search for Piglins. Other than the Bastion Remnant structure, they spawn in Nether Wastes and Crimson Forest biomes.

4. Next, go to a Piglin and throw or use your gold ingot on it. The Piglin will up the ingot and inspect it before accepting it.

5. Once the Piglin is content with the gold it will drop a random item. The process takes six seconds in Java edition and eight on Bedrock.

Tips for Minecraft Piglin Trades

Now that you know the basics of how to trade with Piglins in Minecraft, here are some additional tips to ensure you have the best experience.

  • Baby Piglins: While the baby Piglins can pick up gold ingots, they don't give anything in return. Moreover, they don't even grow into adult Piglins. So, it's best to avoid them altogether.
  • Attacking: If you attack a Piglin while it examines the gold ingot, it will confiscate the ingot and drop nothing. But, you can use sword enchantments to kill the Piglin in a single hit and make it drop the ingot.
  • Piglin Brute: Brutes are stronger variants of Piglins that spawn in all Bastion Remnants. They are hostile towards players and cannot be distracted by gold. So, bartering with them is out of the question.
  • Armor Trims: Even though armor trims allow you to add gold to your armor, they don't get recognized by Piglins. This mechanic might change with Minecraft 1.21 or later, but, for now, you must get complete armor pieces.
