Trial Spawner in Minecraft (2023)

At the moment, Trial Spawners are only a part of the Minecraft Snapshot 23W45A. Their functionality and design are subject to change in the final release.

What are Trial Spawners

Trial Spawners are rare functional blocks in Minecraft that spawn waves of hostile mobs. If you defeat all the hostile mobs, the spawner drops unique rewards and goes into cooldown. Later, you can return to it for another round to collect more rewards.

But, don't forget to invite your friends while dealing with this mischievous block. Trial Spawner increases the amount of mobs as well as the reward to match the number of players around it.

How Long Does the Cooldown Last

Once you defeat all the hostile mobs, the Trial Spawner goes on a cooldown of 30 minutes. During this time, it doesn’t spawn any mob and there is no way to reactivate it other than waiting.

This mechanic might seem normal to players looking for fair combat. But, it can be a big hassle to create loot or XP farms in Minecraft. At least, until you find a way to increase the number of mobs by inviting multiple players.

What Mobs Does Trial Spawner Spawns

The mob a Trial Spawner summons depends on the mob category that its Trial Chamber is targeting. Based on the same, you can expect:

Melee:

  • Zombie
  • Husk
  • Slime

Small Melee

  • Spider
  • Cave Spider
  • Baby Zombie
  • Silverfish

Ranged

  • Skeleton
  • Stray
  • Skeleton with Poison-Tipped Arrows

Every Trial Chamber spawns only one category of mobs within the entire structure. The only exception to this rule is the Breeze which spawns in special rooms that appear in all chambers.

Monster Spawner vs Trial Spawner

The existing Monster Spawners and the new Trial Spanwers are quite similar on the surface. Both of them have a grate-like design with skulls on every face. But, if you dive deeper, the differences between the two spawners start to appear. Here's how both of them compare to one another:

  • Mobs: The Monster Spawners have the ability to spawn zombies, skeletons, spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, Blazes, and magma cubes. Meanwhile, Trial Spawners can spawn additional mobs including baby zombies, slimes, Husks, Strays, and even Breeze.
  • Multiplayer: The amount of mobs a Trial Spanwer summons depends upon the number of players around it. There is no such functionality for the Monster Spawner.
  • Rewards: Other than the loot that mobs drop, you don't get any rewards from Monster Spawners. But, Trial Spawners give unique rewards to every player who participates in the fight. These rewards can even include diamonds and emeralds.
  • Farming: Due to its low cooldown period, Monster Spawners are perfect for farming mobs for XP orbs and loot. It is currently unknown if the same is possible with Trial Spawners.

How to Replace Mob in a Trial Spawner

Much like a regular monster spawner in Minecraft, you can use a spawn egg on the Trial Spawner to replace its mob. When you do, a miniature version of that mob appears inside the Trial Spawner.

Thanks to this mechanic, you can use these new spawners in custom maps. But, keep in mind that changing the mob doesn’t affect the loot of the spawner. Furthermore, the spawn eggs are only available in Creative mode or via commands. So, in survival mode, there is no way to replace the mob inside a Trial Spawner.

How to Find Trial Spawners in Minecraft

Currently, Trial Spawners only spawn inside some rooms of the Trial Chamber structure. Follow these steps to learn how to locate and use them:

1. First, look for a Trial Chamber in Minecraft. It usually generates in the deepslate layers that begin at the height of Y=0.

2. Then, cross the hallways and search for Copper Doors inside the Trial Chamber.

3. If you find oxidized Copper Bulbs on your way, make sure to use an axe to clean them. Having light in the structure will prevent mobs like Creeper from spawning.

Use Pickaxe to Break Trial Spawner

You can use any type of pickaxe to quickly break a Trial Spawner in Minecraft. Doing so will prevent the hostile mobs from spawning but will also take away any future use. Furthermore, there is no way to craft or pick up the Trial Spawner in survival game mode. Even the Silk Touch enchantment doesn't have any effect on this block.

Uses of Trial Spawners

The Trial Spawners as well as the entire Trial Chamber structure are there to help you improve your combat skills. But, much like everything in Minecraft, the intended purpose of a block is never its only job.

Here are some creative ways to use a Trial Spawner in Minecraft:

  • Rewards: The Trial Chambers gives you a renewable way to collect emeralds and diamonds by defeating mobs. If you have Netherite gear, the entire fight is usually over within a minute or two.
  • Mob Loot: All the mobs you kill during a wave drop unique items. This allows you to create farms for items like iron ingots, arrows of slowness, and more.
  • Trap: On the best Minecraft 1.21 servers, you can use Trial Spawners to trap your enemies and make them fight hostile mobs. The trap is most effective on new players or ones with weaker gear.

What is Trial Key

Alongside the basic loot that Trial Spawners drop, you can also get a new Trial Key item. It also spawns inside certain Decorated Pots that generate inside the Trial Chamber. Currently, there is no functionality or chests for the Trial Key to open. But, you can expect it to unlock something extremely useful once Minecraft 1.21 releases.
