How to Make Copper Grates in Minecraft 1.21

The Minecraft 1.21 update is bringing a bunch of new decorative copper and tuff blocks to the game. Some are practical and others are decorative. Among these, copper grates stand out, combining the transparency of leaves with the durability of bricks. But, their usefulness goes way beyond aesthetics. We’re here to uncover how to make copper grates in Minecraft 1.21 and use them to take your builds to the next level.

How to Make Copper Grates in Minecraft 1.21

Note: Copper grates are an experimental feature of Minecraft 1.21. They are subject to change in the future versions and the final release of the update.

What are Copper Grates in Minecraft

The copper grates are a variant of the new copper blocks in Minecraft. They are hollow in design and feature flower-shaped holes on every face. This simple yet unique appearance makes copper grates a perfect fit for creating windows and floors in your bases.

What Do You Need to Make Copper Grates

You need to get the following items to make copper grates in Minecraft:

You can use copper blocks at any stage of oxidation while crafting copper grates in Minecraft. The only condition is that all blocks must be at the same stage of oxidation. Though, you can change oxidize or remove oxidation from a copper grate after creating it too. But, more on that later.

Best Ways to Get Copper

There are a variety of ways to get copper in Minecraft. You can use our dedicated guide to explore them all in depth. But, unless you want to farm copper grates, the best option is to search and mine copper ore blocks.

As per Minecraft ore distribution, they generate most commonly at the height of Y=48. Furthermore, the spawn rate of copper is much higher in the dripstone caves biome.

Crafting Recipe of Copper Grates in Minecraft (Method 1)

Copper grates have a really simple crafting recipe in Minecraft. You just need to place four blocks of copper at the intersection with one another in the crafting grid. Make sure to leave the corners and middle cells of the grid empty. This recipe gives out four copper grates by consuming four blocks of copper.

Use Stonecutter to Make Copper Grates (Method 2)

If you want to get a bunch of copper grates in Minecraft then it's best to skip crafting. Instead, you should use a stonecutter to make copper grates. When you use a stonecutter to create copper grates, you get four grates for every block of copper. On the other hand, crafting consumes one block of copper for every copper grate you get.

Moreover, using the stonecutter is much simpler. Simply, place your block of copper in the stonecutter and pick the copper grate from the available options. You can also use the stonecutter to make other types of copper blocks in Minecraft, except copper bulbs.

Where Do Copper Grates Spawn in Minecraft (Method 3)

If crafting doesn't go as planned, you can always search for naturally generated copper grates. These rare blocks only spawn inside the upcoming Trial Chamber structure. You can find them in hallways and monster rooms of this hostile structure. But, keep in mind that you can only mine copper grates using a stone pickaxe or stronger.

Types of Copper Grates

Much like all copper blocks in the game, the copper grates also change their color with oxidation. Based on that, you can make four types of copper grates in Minecraft:

  • Regular (orange)
  • Weathered (brown with green patches)
  • Exposed (green with brown patches)
  • Oxidized (green)

Please keep in mind that the oxidation only changes copper blocks visually and doesn't affect their strength. So, you can freely use any of them for your creative builds.

How to Oxidize Copper Grates

You can oxidize any copper block in Minecraft by leaving it in one place. Unlike the real world, water or air doesn't help the oxidation process. However, in the Java edition, a group of copper blocks oxidize faster than individual blocks.

So, it's a good strategy to place your copper grates next to one another to oxidize them over time. The oxidation changes the stage of copper once almost every 20 minutes or one in-game day.

How to Remove Oxidation from Copper Grates

Reversing oxidation on copper grates is as easy as oxidizing them. Follow these simple steps to learn how:

1. First, make an axe in Minecraft by combining two sticks with three ingots or three planks. You can use any material to craft the axe but we suggest sticking with iron or diamonds.

2. Then, use your axe on the oxidized copper grate to clean the rust. If you want to completely clean your grate, you must go through each stage of oxidation, one at a time.

3. Alternatively, you can use lightning blot to remove oxidation from copper grates in Minecraft. But, doing so can take forever unless you have an enchanted trident.

Prevent Oxidation in Minecraft

Copper grates keep going through oxidation and color change unless you wax them. Waxing prevents all copper in Minecraft from changing its state. But, since there is no wax in the game, you must rely upon honeycomb for the purpose.

You can use our simple guide on how to get honeycomb in Minecraft to obtain it safely. Then, use a honeycomb on the copper grate or combine it with them within the crafting grid. Once waxed, the copper grates stick to their oxidation state until you use an axe to unwax them.

Make and Use Copper Grates in Minecraft

With that, you are now ready to uncover the most unique base on the Minecraft 1.21 servers. But, it's important to keep your home well-lit, and copper bulbs are an excellent choice for this purpose. And since you will have to craft a bunch of copper blocks for an entire house, letting a Crafter do some work might be a wise pick. But, that’s just us talking. What is your plan to use copper grates in Minecraft? Share your builds on our Discord server. Happy Crafting!
