Witch in Minecraft (2024)
From spawning to potion usage, our guide covers all aspects of witches in Minecraft. Be sure to explore all sections to make the most out of your encounter.
What is a Witch in Minecraft
Witches are common hostile mobs that spawn in the overworld of Minecraft. With a long know and a purple rob, at first glance, witches look nothing more than villagers with jobs. But don't let the appearance deceive you.
Witches use a variety of potions while fighting against players, Iron Golems, and at times, other mobs too. Furthermore, they also use some potions on themselves to get an advantage during a fight. This move, combined with their resistance to various attacks makes Witches quite powerful.
What Potions Can the Witch Use
Depending upon the situation they are in, a Witch can use a variety of potions. These include:
- Potion of Healing: To restore health during combat or while recovering from other damage.
- Splash Potion of Slowness: To prevent the player from escaping the mob's attack range.
- Potion of Fire Resistance: To survive inside lava or against fire.
- Splash Potion of Poison: To reduce the health of the Witch's enemy. Instead of killing you, this potion lowers your health to a single heart. But Witch's aim isn't as good as the Bogged so you don't need to worry much.
- Potion of Swiftness: To quickly evade enemies.
- Potion of Water Breathing: To survive underwater.
- Splash Potion of Weakness: To weaken the melee attacks of the player or another mob.
- Splash Potion of Harming: If the situation isn't suitable for other potions, the witch uses Harming which can even kill its target.
You can hop onto our complete list of Potions in Minecraft to explore the ones the Witch doesn't use. Some of them might even help you fight this cunning mob.
Why are Witches So Strong in Minecraft
Thanks to their infinite stack of potions, the Witches can easily overpower new players. The same also protects them from dying due to suffocation, fire, or even minor damages like sweet berries. But, that's just the surface of their amazing abilities.
These unique mobs can resist poison, instant damage, Evoker fangs, Warden's sonic attack, and the Thorns enchantment, taking on 15% of the damage. Furthermore, in the Bedrock edition, all Witches are completely immune to poison and instant damage, as long as the potion is thrown by them.
Where Do Witches Spawn
Witches can spawn at a light level of 0 in all overworld biomes except mushroom fields and deep dark. But, unlike zombies, they never spawn in pairs or groups. So, if you want to farm witches, just make a dark room and keep clearing other hostile mobs from it.
Witch's Hut
Just like the Pillagers, the Witches also have their separate structure. While it might not be as massive as a Woodland Mansion, you can find the Witch's hut inside the swamp biome. It generates floating above the swamp water with a black cat and a cauldron inside it.
Witches in Minecraft Raids
Once you get the hang of it, taking down individual Witches becomes quite easy. But, things can take a drastic turn for the worse when these mobs join groups. That's right, Witches spawn as a part of raids in Minecraft with wave 4 in Bedrock Edition and wave 3 or 4 in Java Edition.
During these raids, these Witches also go after villagers and Wandering Traders alongside players. Yet, the threat they pose isn't limited to their attacks only. The Witches often use their potions to heal Pillagers, making them harder to kill. So, if you plan to start a Raid in Minecraft, be sure to keep an eye on the Witches.
How to Turn Villagers into Witches
The connection between Witches and villagers goes well beyond their appearance. So, if you can't find witches while roaming around your world, it's time to create one. Here's how:
1. First, trap a villager inside their hut by blocking the doors. Then, break the roof open.
2. Next, make a Lightning Rod in Minecraft and place it next to the villager. This rod pulls any nearby lightning strike to its location.
3. Alternatively, you can also use a Trident with Channeling enchantment.
4. Lastly, wait for a thunderstorm to occur. As soon as the lightning strikes the villager it will turn into a witch. This works with natural lighting as well as the one pulled through your arrangements.
5. But, once a villager turns into a Witch, there is no way to turn it back. You can only cure a zombie villager in Minecraft but not Witches.
What Do Witches Drop
If you can somehow avoid its potions and kill a witch in Minecraft, it has a chance to drop these items:
- Glowstone Dust
- Sugar
- Redstone Dust
- Spider Eye
- Glass Bottle
- Gunpowder
- Stick
Other than these items, the Witches can also drop the potions that it is drinking. But, you must kill the Witch while it is drinking a potion to obtain it.
Can Witches Ride Other Mobs
Even though they always join Raids in Minecraft, the Witches are still not classified as Illagers. This prevents them from riding the Ravagers. But, that limit only applies to the players on the Bedrock edition. Meanwhile, Java players can use the ride command in Minecraft to make the Witch ride any mob in the game.
The command has this simple syntax:
/ride <rider> mount <vehicle>
Replace the "Rider" with the entity ID of a nearby Witch and enter the ID of the mob that you want it to ride. You can pick any mob that's near the Witch including boss mobs.
