How to Make a Carpet in Minecraft (2023)

Our guide covers all the basics of carpets in Minecraft and their types and variants before moving on to the process of obtaining them. If you are already familiar with them, please feel free to skip ahead.

What is Carpet in Minecraft

Carpets are thin decorative items in Minecraft that can be placed on top of other blocks. In terms of design, carpets are the same height as a pressure plate but can be dyed in various colors. Moreover, just like wool, walking on top of carpets doesn't make any noise.

Types of Carpet in Minecraft

You can dye carpets of Minecraft in 16 unique colors including:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Cyan
  • Gray
  • Green
  • Light Blue
  • Light Gray
  • Lime
  • Magenta
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Purple
  • Red
  • White
  • Yellow

Please note that, unlike armor trims, you can't dye a carpet using crafting materials. Instead, you have to craft coloring dye using various natural materials. But, more on that later.

How to Get Carpet in Minecraft

While most players learn how to make a carpet in Minecraft for their collection, crafting isn't the only method to get this item. Let's explore some alternative methods to acquire carpets within the game.

Where Does Carpet Spawn

You can find carpets naturally spawning in the following structures:

  • Igloos
  • Villages
  • Woodland Mansion
  • Ancient City

You can find a variety of carpets in each of these structures. So, make sure to jump on a reliable Minecraft survival seed to find and explore all of them.

Trading

One of the most reliable ways to get carpets in Minecraft is by trading with Apprentice-level shepherd villagers. These villagers offer four carpets of the same color in exchange for a single emerald. You can use our dedicated guide to easily find emeralds in Minecraft.

How to Make a Carpet in Minecraft

Follow these simple steps to craft a carpet in Minecraft:

1. First, make a crafting table in Minecraft by combining four wooden planks. You can use any type of food for the planks, including the cherry wood from the new Cherry Grove biome.

2. Then, search for sheep in your world. While they can appear in any biome with grass, grove, and plains biomes are particularly reliable due to their expansive open grassy fields.

3. Then, craft shears by combining two iron ingots. You can use our dedicated Minecraft 1.20 ore distribution guide to easily find iron in your world.

4. Next, use your shears on a sheep to collect wool blocks from it. Alternatively, you can even kill the sheep to make it drop the wool. But doing so will eliminate your chance of getting more wool from the same mob.

5. Finally, place two wool blocks right next to each other in the crafting grid to turn them into carpets. Two wool blocks give out three carpets with this crafting recipe.

How to Dye a Carpet in Minecraft

By default, the carpet you create matches the color of the wool blocks that were used for creating it. However, you can easily change its color using a dye to get any type of wool in Minecraft. Here's how:

1. First, place a flower or any other coloring ingredient in the crafting grid to turn it into a piece of dye. For example, if you place one bone meal in the crafting grid it becomes white dye.

2. Then, you just have to place your carpet alongside the dye in the crafting grid to change its color. This mechanic works with all types of dyes in the game.

3. But, unlike leather armor or banners (which can be applied on shields), you cannot combine dyes to create unlimited variations for carpets. Currently, carpets are limited to 16 distinct colors but future updates like Minecraft 1.21 might change this.

Education Edition Dye

Dying works in the same way for all editions of Minecraft. Though, things can get interesting with the Education Edition's scientific items. You can combine a bottle of bleach with a carpet of any color to turn it into a white carpet. The recipe essentially removes the hue of a carpet, leaving a clean texture behind.

Uses of Carpets in Minecraft

Now that you know how to make and dye a carpet in Minecraft, it's time to put it to use. Let's go over all the unique ways to use it.

Decoration

You can place a carpet on top of any block in Minecraft. The only exception is air and in the Java edition, item frames. Moreover, you cannot place the carpets on the side or beneath another block, it always goes on the top.

Interestingly, when you try to place a carpet on top of another carpet, it starts floating. The game counts all the base carpets as a complete block. This weird mechanic allows you to create bizarre walls and structures with carpets.

One-Way Light

Even though carpets are a solid block, they don't block any lights passing through them. So, you can use them to create light-emitting floors without revealing the source block.

Save the Bees

If you want to get a honeycomb in Minecraft, you have to place a campfire beneath bee nests to pacify the bees. But, unfortunately, the bees can accidentally fly into the flames and set themselves on fire. To fix that, you can place a carpet on top of the campfire and make the flames inaccessible. Keep in mind that this trick also eliminates the pacifying effect in the Bedrock edition.

Avoid Warden and Sculk

Walking on top of the carpet makes no noise or vibration. This mechanic allows you to avoid triggering Sculk sensors and spawning the Warden in Minecraft. Plus, you can also use it to prevent the Warden from detecting your movement if it has already spawned.

Mob Trap

When you place one carpet on top of another, it takes up the space of the air block. But since it's not a complete block, mobs avoid walking on top of multiple layers of carpets. Endermen don't even try to teleport on top of double carpet pillars.

However, this mechanic isn't as foolproof as using fences in the game and can lead to tricky situations. On Java edition, if a mob ends up on double carpets, it becomes perfectly still. While it might be hard to pull off, you can use this mechanic to trap mobs.

Decorate Llamas

You can place carpets on llamas to decorate and make them visually distinct. This is especially useful when you have a caravan of llamas and you need to identify different llamas. Moreover, the carpets also serve as a beautiful decoration that provides a visual upgrade to usually basic-looking llamas.

Make and Use Carpets in Minecraft

Now that you have access to a bunch of carpets in Minecraft, it's time to unleash your creativity and explore their versatile uses. Most players usually place them alongside stripped wood to create floors for their bases. However, that's just the surface of their uses. For instance, placing a carpet on top of a campfire can help pacify bees, making it safer to obtain honeycombs. Additionally, you also use carpets to decorate llamas alongside saddles to make them more unique. Though, we are eager to learn about how you are planning to use carpets in Minecraft.
