Note: The new types of wolves are an experiment feature which is subject to change before Minecraft 1.21 comes out.

How Many Types of Wolves Are There in Minecraft

With version 1.21, there are a total of nine types of wolves in Minecraft:

  • Pale Wolf (Normal)
  • Rusty Wolf
  • Spotted Wolf
  • Black Wolf
  • Striped Wolf
  • Snowy Wolf
  • Ashen Wolf
  • Woods Wolf
  • Chestnut Wolf

Irrespective of their type, you can tame wolves in Minecraft using the same method. But, before we get to that part it's important to know where each type of wolf spawns in Minecraft.

Where to Find Wolves in Minecraft

The different types of wolves in Minecraft not only have distinct appearances but also unique spawn biomes. Moreover, some of the wolves also have features that make them harder to find than their counterparts.

But, worry not. We are going to cover everything you need to know about all wolves in Minecraft. Let's dive in!

Pale Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Taiga
  • Pack Size: 4 Wolves

Pale wolves are the "normal" type of wolves in Minecraft. Familiar to most players, these wolves are almost as old as the game itself. They are grayish-white in color and only spawn in the Taiga biome. You can find Pale wolves wandering in a pack of up to 4 members on the grassland around spruce trees.

Rusty Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Jungle, Bamboo Jungle
  • Pack Size: 2-4 Wolves

With a fierce look and a vibrant brown coat, the Rusty wolves roam around the jungles of Minecraft. At times, you can also find them in the bamboo jungles, right next to the pandas. But, unfortunately, both of these jungle biomes are quite rare in the overworld. So, you will have to either roam around for hours or use the best Minecraft jungle seeds to meet Rusty.

Spotted Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Savanna Plateaus
  • Pack Size: 4-8 Wolves

Sporting white, orange, and black spots, the Spotted wolves rule the savanna plateaus. This is the rarer type of savanna biome that cannot generate villages or outposts. So, while you might have to struggle for resources while looking for the Spotted wolf, the armadillos are sure to lighten the mood.

Black Wolf in Minecraft

  • Spawn Biome: Old Growth Pine Taiga
  • Pack Size: 2-4 Wolves

Going closer to their initial home, the Black wolves also spawn in the taiga biome but only in the Old Growth Pine variant. This is the biome that generates arrow-shaped tall trees which are easy to spot even from a distance.

But what isn't easy to spot is the Black wolf during nighttime and in shadows. So, either grab a Potion of Night Vision or keep your eyes peeled during the search.

Striped Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Wooded Badlands
  • Pack Size: 4-8 Wolves

If you are not a fan of hyenas in the real world then Striped Wolf is here to change your mind. It has a unique sand-colored coat with black stripes running over it. You can find this scary-looking but adorable wolf in the Wooded Badlands biome. This is the only type of badlands that generates a massive forest of oak trees.

Snowy Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Grove
  • Pack Size: 1 Wolves

As you might know, snowy foxes are the rarest type of foxes in Minecraft. The story repeats itself in the case of the snowy wolf. It is the only type of wolf in the game that doesn't spawn in a pack. Instead, the snowy wolf wanders by itself in the cold snowy groves.

Plus, its all-white fur makes this wolf pretty hard to spot against the white snow. So, if you want to find all wolves in Minecraft, Snowy will be your biggest challenge. At least, until you grab a spyglass to locate it.

Ashen Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Snowy Taiga
  • Pack Size: 4 Wolves

If there was a fashion show for wolves in Minecraft then Ashen is sure to win. It is a white wolf with an adorable grey coat over it. You can find this wolf in Minecraft's snowy taigas. But, unlike Snowy wolves, you don't need to worry about them blending with the snow.

Woods Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Forest
  • Pack Size: 4 Wolves

Easily one of the most common types of wolves in Minecraft, the woods wolf spawns in the forest biome. True to their name, these wolves have a woodish brown color resembling oak wood's hue. While these wolves begin their journey in the forest, you can find them roaming around other nearby biomes too including plains.

Chestnut Wolf

  • Spawn Biome: Old Growth Spruce Taiga
  • Pack Size: 2-4 Wolves

As you can guess by its name, this cute wolf has a chestnut-colored coat. The fur on its mouth and paws is darker, creating a beautiful contrast. There is no doubt that these furry friends are great partners for a night around the campfire in the old-growth spruce taiga.
