Note: This guide is based on the experimental armadillos from Minecraft Preview 1.20.60.23. Its design, behavior, and mechanics are subject to change in future updates.

What is Armadillo Mob in Minecraft

Winner of 2023 Mob Vote, armadillos are natural animal mobs in Minecraft. They are brown and sport a sturdy shell on their back. Much like their real-world counterparts, Minecraft's Armadillos retreat into their shells and turn into blocky balls.

What Are Armadillos Scared Of?

There are a variety of elements that can make an armadillo hide in its shell. The list includes:

  • Sprinting players
  • Players riding vehicles like boats or other mobs like camel
  • Undead mobs including variants of zombies, skeletons, Phantom, and Wither

What Do Armadillos Eat in Minecraft

Armadillos only eat spider eyes in Minecraft. You can use them to lure armadillos and prevent them from going into their protective ball-like shape. As for getting the eyes, you just need to kill spiders or cave spiders to make them drop spider eyes. These hostile mobs are fairly common in caves and dark areas of the overworld.

Can You Tame Armadillos

Similar to most neutral mobs in the game, there is no way to tame an armadillo in Minecraft. But, luckily, you can use its favorite food to befriend an armadillo and get close to it.

Where to Find Armadillo in Minecraft

Armadillos only spawn in these biomes of Minecraft 1.21:

  • Savanna: The regular variant of savannas is mostly made up of flat areas covered with tall grass and a few ravines. Pillager outposts and villages are easy to find in this variant.
  • Savanna Plateau: It is an elevated and hilly variant of the savanna biome where llamas can spawn. No structure spawns in this biome variant.
  • Windswept Savanna: You can find weird world generation and eroded mountains in this rarest variant of the savanna. Its bizarre terrain resembles the Minecraft Amplified worlds and doesn't allow any structures to spawn.
  • Badlands: Massive arid areas that are mostly made up of red sand and terracotta blocks. They are quite common on the best Minecraft desert seeds.
  • Wooded Badlands: A variant of the Badlands biome with oak trees.

How to Get Armadillo Scute

When it comes to mob loot, the Armadillos only drop scutes. Once you get enough of these scutes, you can craft a wolf armor. Follow these simple steps to get armadillo scutes in Minecraft:

1. First, look for and kill spiders or cave spiders to get spider eyes in Minecraft.

2. Next, make a brush in Minecraft by combining a copper ingot with a feather and a stick.

3. Then, go to the savanna biome and search for armadillos. You can find them randomly wandering around in the area.

4. Once you find an armadillo, slowly approach it while holding spider eyes in your hand. Make sure not to sprint or use a vehicle near it.

5. If you accidentally make the armadillo roll-up, calmly wait for 3 seconds for it to unroll.

6. Finally, use your brush on the armadillo to make it drop scutes. Alternatively, you can also keep following it around until it naturally drops scutes.

Will Wolf Armor Be Effective

You can combine multiple armadillo scutes to craft a wolf armor in Minecraft. With it equipped, your wolves will get the same level of protection as diamond horse armor in Minecraft. It is quite effective against a variety of damage except for fall damage and magical attacks.

How to Prevent Armadillo from Curling Up

As you know at this point, Armadillos are cautious creatures and even slight fear is enough to make them curl into a ball. Fortunately, there are a bunch of ways to tackle this mechanic:

  • Water: You can place the armadillos in water to prevent it from rolling up.
  • Air: The armadillo also loses its rolling ability when it is in the air. You can use slime blocks or a lead, to make it hop around or dangle in the air to prevent rolling.
  • Spider Eyes: When you hold spider eyes in your hand, the armadillos will follow you around. This makes them trust you and prevents rolling.
  • Sneaking: Similar to the Warden, the armadillo doesn't detect your presence when you are sneaking.

Spiders are Afraid of Armadillos

As you know at this point, armadillos love eating spider eyes in Minecraft. So, it's not surprising that spiders and cave spiders are scared of them. Unless the armadillo is curled up, these mobs run away from it. But, despite this behavior, the armadillos don't attack spiders or any other mob in the game.

How Many Scutes Can You Get with a Brush

When you use a brush on an armadillo, it loses some of its durability. Keeping that in mind, you can get four scutes from an armadillo before the brush breaks. So, you will need at least two brushes if you want to craft wolf armor.

When are Armadillos Coming to Minecraft?

Armadillos are a part of the Minecraft 1.21 update which is expected to release in June 2024. Fortunately, you can hop on the latest snapshot and preview to test it already. But, keep in mind that the current version of this mob is experimental and subject to changes.

Bonus: How to Ride an Armadillo in Minecraft

Officially, riding armadillos in Minecraft 1.21 within survival gameplay is impossible. But, there is already a built-in solution for this. All you need to do is use the "/ride" command and get on the back of any mob including the armadillo.

It has the following format:

/ride @s mount <vehicle>

Here, the "@s" "@s" represents the player, while "vehicle" signifies the mob you wish to ride. When armadillos are available in the game, you can add them as a vehicle and target them using this command.
