What are Chicken Coops in Minecraft

Chicken Coops serve as a home to your poultry friends. They keep the chickens safe in one place while giving them a spot to lay eggs and avoid danger. Moreover, the coops also serve as a great visual upgrade to your base and village builds.

As you might expect, the design of a coop can make or break your plans. So, let's continue exploring and learning how to make Minecraft chicken coops.

Where Do Chicken Coop Spawn

Unfortunately, chicken coops don't generate naturally within the world of Minecraft. They are the only domestic mob that doesn't appear inside the villages. Probably it might change when the Fletching Table gets functionality. Until then, it's your job to build it.

How to Make a Chicken Coop in Minecraft

With the basics out of the way, let's explore everything you need to know about building a Minecraft chicken coop.

Items Required

You need to collect these items to build a chicken coop in Minecraft:

  • Wooden Trapdoors
  • Wooden Slabs
  • Cobblestone Blocks
  • Lantern
  • Fences
  • Chain
  • Stairs

While most players go for a mix of oak and dark oak wood for chicken coops, that's only a stylistic choice. Feel free to experiment with different wood blocks including cherry and even the new bamboo wood.

Steps to Make Basic Minecraft Chicken Coop

Once you have collected your items, follow these steps to make a chicken coop in Minecraft:

1. First, find an open 7x7 area in your world. We suggest you stick with a leveled biome, like Plains, so you can easily expand the coop later.

2. Next, surround the entire area by placing trapdoor and opening them. When you are done, the trapdoor will create a boundary for your coop.

3. After making the border, go to each of its corners and make a tower using fences. Then, place the plank on top of it and attach a chain with a lantern on its side. The light from the lantern will prevent hostile mobs from spawning.

4. Next, cover a 3*3 area with fences in a corner of your coop. Then, place slabs over them to create a platform.

5. Use open trapdoors to create walls on top of your platform. Then, place planks over it to make a roof.

6. Finally, add stairs to the platform for chickens to travel and put doors to complete your Minecraft Coop.

7. Later, you can add carpets, coarse dirt, and much more to decorate your coop.

Elements of a Good Coop

As you know, coops can have a huge variety of designs in Minecraft. It often comes down to your requirements and the amount of chickens wandering around. But, here are a few notions that you can use to test your plan:

  • Expansion: With time, your chicken population is bound to grow. So, it's always wise to pick an area and a design that you can easily expand.
  • Lighting: While hostile mobs don't attack chickens, they can still pose a danger to you. But, all you need are a few light blocks to prevent them from spawning.
  • Egg Collection: If you have the time, you can also arrange a system to collect eggs. This gives you a chance to spawn more chickens over time.

Automatic Egg Farm

At first glance, this simple design looks like a simple wooden coop. It uses trapdoors for the border and a combination of slabs with stairs for the hut. But, what makes it special is the automatic egg collection system.

The chickens can freely roam around the farm laying eggs while the hoppers collect them. If you make it in spawn chunks, the farm can continue to work forever. Later, when you come back to it, you can collect eggs and use them to get more chickens.

10x13 Chicken Coop

Taking a step beyond smaller coops, this amazing design covers a massive area and features a beautiful hut. The chickens can hop in and out of their house thanks to a rail line at the door. Moreover, the area also features haybale, lanterns, and a lot of fences.

The best part is that this design looks like it's part of the vanilla villages of Minecraft. So, you can create it in your world without making it stand out. Doing so also makes it easier to avoid unsuspecting looters on Minecraft SMP servers.
