Note: Our guide relies upon the armadillos from the Minecraft Preview 1.20.60.23. All the designs, features, and mob behavior are subject to changes.

Where Do Armadillos Spawn

Armadillos exclusively spawn in the savanna biome and its variants in Minecraft. They are fairly common in the biome and you can find them wandering around in groups of 2-4 mobs. Thanks to this, it's quite easy to get enough armadillos for breeding as soon as you reach a savanna.

Tips to Find Savanna Biome

Here are a few tips you can use to easily find a savanna biome in your world:

  • Temperature: Savanna usually generates around other temperate biomes including plains, forests, birch forests, and jungles.
  • Mountains: The savanna's windswept variants generate a variety of mountains and floating rocks. You can easily see them from a distance, so it might be worth keeping an eye out.
  • Color: Unlike most biomes, the savanna has a distinct sepia tone for all its blocks. Even the water and grass get a dusty hue in this biome. This makes it easy to spot savannas amidst other vibrant biomes.
  • Command: If your search isn't going well, you can use the following command to locate the closest savanna biome:
/locate biome savanna

What Do Armadillos Eat in Minecraft

Similar to their real-world counterpart, armadillo mobs are fond of spider eyes. They are also the food that you need to breed armadillos in Minecraft. Follow these steps to collect these eyes:

1. First, make a sword or any other weapon in Minecraft for your defense.

2. Then, once the night falls, find and kill spiders. They have around 1/3 chance of dropping a spider eye upon dying. Alternatively, you can also search for caves in the overworld to hunt cave spiders.

3. If going for the source isn't working out, you can also get 0-6 spider eyes by killing a witch.

4. Not to forget, spider eyes also spawn in the chests of desert pyramids. Our best Minecraft desert seeds are full of these structures.

Can You Tame An Armadillo

Unfortunately, there is no way to befriend or tame an armadillo in Minecraft. Moreover, you have to be extra careful around them as they roll up into a ball when scared. But, you can use a lead on the armadillo to move it around even without taming it.

How to Breed Armadillos in Minecraft

Once you are in the savanna biome with two spider eyes, follow these steps to breed armadillos in Minecraft:

1. First, find a pair of armadillos in the savanna biome and trap them with fences or building blocks.

2. Alternatively, you can lure two armadillos by holding spider eyes in your hands. Doing so also prevents them from rolling up.

3. Next, feed one spider eye to each of the armadillos and make sure they are next to each other.

4. Then, hearts will appear above armadillos' heads and a baby armadillo will spawn.

How Long Does it Take for Baby Armadillo to Grow

Similar to most breedable mobs, it only takes 20 minutes or a complete Minecraft day for a baby armadillo to fully grow up. Meanwhile, the parents only have a cooldown of 5 minutes before they can be bred again.

How Do You Get Armadillo Scutes

Unlike turtle scutes in Minecraft, you don't have to breed armadillos to collect scutes. Instead, you just need to use a brush on the armadillo to harvest its scutes and later, make a wolf armor in Minecraft.
