How to Repair Armor in Minecraft (5 Methods)

Have you ever been in a fight only for your armor to break at the worst moment? This relatable and frustrating moment is quite easy to avoid. All you need to do is repair your armor in Minecraft. Plus, if done right, you can even make a profit out of it. Here’s how!

How to Repair Armor in Minecraft (2024)

Your armor in Minecraft consists of a chestplate, helmet, boots, and leggings. So, you can use our guide to repair any of these items.

How Does Armor Lose Durability

The durability of armor changes with the material you use to craft it. But, irrespective of the type, all armors lose durability from the following activities:

  • Receiving damage from melee or projectile attacks
  • Other forms of damage including fall damage
  • Using armor pieces to mine or break blocks
  • Dropping an anvil on your armor

Combined Two Pieces of Armor (Method 1)

At times, you might find yourself with two pieces of armor, both with reduced durability. In that case, you just need to combine your armor pieces on a crafting table to combine their durability. But, keep in mind that this only works if the type and material of your armor are the same. The armor trims don't affect this mechanic.

So, you can combine two iron helmets and not an iron helmet with a golden helmet. Similarly, you cannot combine diamond boots with diamond leggings, even though their material is the same. Moreover, this process also removes enchantments in Minecraft from your armor pieces.

Use a Grindstone (Method 2)

Losing your enchantments is a big deal when it comes to combining damaged armor in Minecraft. But, what if you get bonus durability while doing so? That's exactly what a grindstone offers. You need one stone slab, two planks, and two sticks to craft it.

Then, you need to place two damaged pieces of the same material in the grindstone to merge their durability. While the grindstone takes away any enchantments, it also adds 5% extra durability to the resulting item. This is one of the most reliable ways to repair armor in Minecraft.

Anvil to Repair Armor in Minecraft (Method 3)

When it comes to figuring out how to repair armor in Minecraft, an anvil is often people's first choice. This is mostly because of the ease that this block provides. Here's how to use it:

1. First, make an anvil in Minecraft using iron blocks and ingots.

2. Next, use our Minecraft ore distribution guide to find the material of your armor. For example, to repair an iron chestplate, you need to get an iron ingot.

3. Finally, place the damaged armor along with the material to restore its durability. Doing so will consume some levels of your XP (experience). The best part is that using an anvil doesn't affect your enchantments.

4. But, keep in mind that you can only use an anvil a few times. Once that limit is over, the anvil deems the operation "too e"xpensive.

Mending Enchantment (Method 4)

In every other method on our list, you have to make a lot of arrangements before repairing your armor in Minecraft. But, what if you allowed your armor to repair itself? That's where the Mending enchantment comes into the picture.

With Mending on, your armor pieces can consume any experience orbs you collect and restore their durability. Thanks to this, you can gain durability instead of losing it while fighting on the best Minecraft PvP servers. The only drawback is that you won't be level up until all your enchanted items are healed.

Trade Your Old Armor for New (Method 5)

As a part of the new villager trades, you can trade one piece of armor to get another armor piece in return. For example, you can trade your boots to get a chestplate.

But, these trades only work under the following conditions:

  • You need to find an armorer in Taiga village. This is an exclusive biome-based trade.
  • The armorer must be at the Expert level, no higher or lower.
  • These trades only work with diamond armor and also require some emeralds.
  • You get leggings for boots; a chestplate for leggings; boots for a helmet and a helmet for a chestplate.
  • The durability of your traded item doesn't matter on your side. But, the villager always gives out an item with full durability.

Best Ways to Repair Armor in Minecraft

With that, you now have tons of ways to repair your armor in Minecraft. But during the repair, don’t forget to upgrade your armor to Netherite. Exclusive to the Nether dimension, this is the most powerful material in the game that gives your gear massive durability.
