How to Transfer Players Between Servers in Minecraft

Online servers are easily one of the best ways to experience the world of Minecraft. Yet joining, switching, and transferring between Minecraft servers can be a hassle. It's time to change that with the transfer command in Minecraft. Let's explore how!

How to Transfer Players Between Servers in Minecraft

The Transfer command is an experimental feature of the Minecraft 1.21 update. It is subject to change in future test versions of the game.

What is Transfer Command in Minecraft

Revealed with the Snapshot 24w04a, the Transfer Command in Minecraft allows you to move players between different servers. It functions similarly to teleportation in Minecraft. But instead of coordinates in your world, it moves you to a new server using its port address.

As per our testing, you can use it to transfer players between servers in Minecraft without hampering their progress. But, there is no way to move your builds or even your pets across servers. So, it's better to bid your farewell before using the transfer command in Minecraft.

Transfer Players Between Servers with Command

The Transfer command in Minecraft has the following syntax:

/transfer <hostname> [<port>] [<players>]

Let's break down its parameters and keywords:

  • Hostname: A string value that describes the hostname of the target server. When you are hosting a server on your system, this value is the same as your public IP address.
  • Port: An integer value that denotes the port number of the server. If you are not using one, the default value is 25565.
  • Player: This keyword contains the username of the player you want to transfer. If you want to move yourself to a new server, replace the value with "@s".

Here's an example of what this command can look like in the game:

/transfer 198.162.0.10 19132 @s

Restrictions on Transfer Command in Minecraft

For the transfer command to work properly, it must meet the following conditions:

  • The servers that you are transferring between must be on the same version of Minecraft Java.
  • If there is a server whitelist, the player must be on it to prevent errors.
  • You can only transfer players between dedicated Minecraft servers. Most of the top entries on our list of Minecraft servers fit this characteristic.

What is a Dedicated Server

When players host a server in Minecraft, they often use cloud-based services. In that case, a single CPU hosts multiple servers at the same time. But, in the case of a dedicated server, a single machine is only running one particular Minecraft server. You can get one by hosting a server on your system or buying dedicated plans on cloud hosting.
