How to Breed Goats in Minecraft

Cute face, angry behavior, and majestic horns. Goats are some of the rarest and most fun mobs in the game. Yet, it often takes hours to even find one of them. But, what if you could have as many of them as you want? Let’s learn how to breed goats in Minecraft and spawn a bunch of them!

How to Breed Goats in Minecraft (2024)

Breeding goats is a simple three-step process. Just follow one of them at a time and you will quickly have a family of goats.

Step 1: Find Goats in Minecraft

Goats are one of the most notorious neutral mobs in Minecraft. They spawn in a group of two to three mobs of opaque blocks in hilly regions in the game. Plus, goats need a light level of 7 or higher to spawn.

Biomes to Find Goat

Since goats spawn on top of mountains, you can only find them within these Minecraft biomes:

  • Frozen Peaks
  • Jagged Peaks
  • Snowy Slopes

Our list of the best Minecraft mountain seeds can help you speed up the search. But, more often than not, you can spot mountains from a long distance by climbing tall structures. Just make sure your render distance is high enough too.

Step 2: What Do Goats Eat in Minecraft

You can only breed goats in Minecraft by feeding them wheat. They are not fond of any other food in the game. To collect wheat, you first need to break grass and collect wheat seeds. Then, you can plant seeds in Minecraft to grow as much wheat as you want. But, this process can take you multiple days within the game to finish.

Alternatively, you can also collect wheat using these methods:

  • Breaking hay bale that spawns in villages
  • Collecting wheat from the farmlands of villagers
  • Looting chests in structures including igloos, ruins, outposts, shipwrecks, mansions, and trail ruins

Step 3: How to Breed Goats in Minecraft

After finding goats and collecting wheat, follow these steps to breed goats in Minecraft:

1. First, hold wheat in your hand to lure goats to a suitable location. You can also use a lead for this task.

2. Then, use fences to create a small pen for your two goats. Make sure to add a roof to your structure to prevent jobs from jumping over.

3. Finally, feed one piece of wheat to each of your goats to make them enter "love mode". Then, within seconds, a baby goat will spawn. The process gives you 7 XP orbs.

It takes around 20 minutes for the baby goat to grow into an adult. But, you can speed up their growth by feeding them some wheat.

Screaming Goats

When you breed two goats in Minecraft, there is a 2% chance that the baby is a screaming goat. Unlike normal goats, screamers make screaming noises and ram more often. Moreover, when you breed a regular goat with a screaming goat, the chances of the baby being a screamer go to 50%.
