How to Ride a Llama in Minecraft (2024)

Llamas have the most unique riding mechanics in Minecraft. Make sure to explore each section to avoid any errors.

Where Do Llamas Spawn in Minecraft

Llamas are one of the rarer neutral mobs that only spawn in the overworld dimension. They usually spawn in herds of 4 mobs on grass blocks above light level 7. You can only find them within these biomes:

  • Savanna (BE only)
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna (BE only)
  • Windswept Hills & Forests

As you can notice, llamas are a fan of rarer warm biomes in the game. So, unless you plan on wandering around hundreds of blocks, it's best to use our list of best Minecraft savanna seeds.

Trader Llamas

If you don't get lucky while exploring, it's time to wait for llamas to come to you. Once a couple of days have passed on the game, a Wandering Trader spawns near you with two llamas. Unlike wild llamas, the Trader Llamas have a unique appearance and are leashed.

How to Tame a Llama in Minecraft

With basics out of the way, follow these steps to tame a llama in Minecraft:

1. First, explore windswept or savanna biomes and look for a Llama.

2. Once you find a llama, right-click on it to start riding it. The llama will let you stay on top of it for a few seconds before throwing you off.

3. Repeat the last step multiple times until hearts appear on top of the llama's head. This indicates that your llama is tamed and you can ride it without being thrown off.

What Do Llamas Eat

The process of taming a llama in Minecraft is quite similar to horses. Expanding upon the same, you can also feed these mobs to tame them faster. Llamas are fond of wheat and hay bales, you can feed either to take them faster.

Can You Ride a Llama in Minecraft

Once you've tamed a llama, you can right-click or use a secondary action key to ride it. Unfortunately, llamas don't support saddles so you cannot control their movements. While you are riding a llama it will roam around freely.

But, you can use a lead to put a leash on it and make it walk around. Doing so lets you control the llama while another player can ride it. So, in terms of movement, llamas are only useful on Minecraft SMP servers

Make a Caravan of Llamas

Luckily, what llamas lack in terms of movement, they make up for in storage. You can place carpets and chests on them to turn llamas into portable storage. But things get really wild when the number of llamas goes up.

When you put a lead on one llama, it sends a signal to nearby llamas to follow the first mob. This mechanic allows you to create a caravan of up to 10 mobs. Plus, you can put a lead on a new llama to increase the caravan by 10 mobs and so on.

With such a versatile and powerful collaboration system, llama can even best Shilker boxes in portability. Just make sure to use different carpets on each llama to avoid creating confusion.
